The Guardian Early Learning Centre contributes to the contemporary typology for children centered spaces within the boundaries of a commercial office building, where the physical needs relating to scale, light, views and natural ventilation are emphasized and extended to include sensory learning stimuli such as comparison and unevenness, along with colour, sound, touch and smell.
Recognising the potential for the plan, section and identity of the Centre to add to the sense of community and ‘place’ spatial planning and material and finishes detail have been conceived accordingly.
The design fosters connectivity to the Brisbane city. As the children play in this space they experience the outdoor environment; the breeze, the temperature, and the sounds of the city. The articulation of the physical environment, particularly the unifying low level bulkhead, is conceived as an extension of the natural setting, with carved and facetted highlights coloured in tones of the place.
