Enjoy a self-guided tour of State Library of Queensland (SLQ) and find out what it takes to run a library in the 21st century.

Discover one of Brisbane’s best, award-winning public buildings, and the hidden secrets within its brutalist walls. The Cultural Precinct in South Brisbane has been home to State Library of Queensland (SLQ) since 1988, following 88 years in its original home in Brisbane’s CBD.

In 2006, SLQ reopened following a major redevelopment which more than doubled the size of the building and transformed it into a major cultural and learning destination. The redeveloped building, with its trademark ‘sails’, river decks and Red Box suspended over the Brisbane River, has won Royal Australian Institute of Architects Awards, both state and national, for interior architecture and public architecture.

However, it is in the use of the building that makes SLQ special. As one of the last free public spaces, SLQ’s focus on access for all has created a hive of activity, day and night, as people come to engage, learn, research, study or to just enjoy the space.

While in the precinct don’t forget to visit The Edge – a community makerspace and resource hub for all things art, science, technology and enterprise. Also, young ones can drop in for a free Little Designers workshop and other fun family activities on Saturday 7 October as part of State Library’s Fun Palace.
