Toowong Cemetery: A Step Back in the Past Walking Tour

Location: Toowong

About the Event:

This guided tour took visitors past a selection of headstones bearing fascinating Victorian era symbols as guides presented the stories of the lives of those buried there and explained the significance of the symbols. Presented by Brisbane City Council and the Friends of Toowong Cemetery.

The Toowong Cemetery is a Brisbane icon and was once the city’s main cemetery. The cemetery is home to over 120,000 people with colonial monuments, buildings and structures dating back as early as the 1870’s. The original Sexton’s office, gates and ornamental fencing at the main entrance, Amenities building and the shelters will all be available throughout the day and the office will be open for people wishing to find relatives that may be buried in the cemetery.
