Visitors took a guided walk through some of the earlier Irish graves in heritage-listed Toowong Cemetery where they heard the interesting and, in some cases, humorous stores of the characters interred there. Presented by Brisbane City Council and the Friends of Toowong Cemetery.
The Toowong Cemetery is a Brisbane icon and was once the city’s main cemetery. The cemetery is home to over 120,000 people with colonial monuments, buildings and structures dating back as early as the 1870’s. The original Sexton’s office, gates and ornamental fencing at the main entrance, Amenities building and the shelters will all be available throughout the day and the office will be open for people wishing to find relatives that may be buried in the cemetery.
