Brisbane Open House and Brisbane Powerhouse invite you on an intimate tour to uncover the hidden secrets and fascinating stories behind one of Brisbane’s most iconic buildings!
Brisbane Powerhouse has transformed over the years from a 1920s power station, to a derelict building turned iconic arts centre on the Brisbane River. Join us for a guided backstage tour to explore the venue’s unique history, striking architecture, and heritage-listed ‘aerosol art’.
This tour offers a unique insight into the aerosol art – much of which is located behind the scenes. Learn how this artwork contributes not only to the story and history of Brisbane Powerhouse, but also the complexities and importance of preserving the works.
This heritage-listed building started life as a power station in 1928 and in its peak in the post war years powered the largest tram system in the Southern Hemisphere. In 1971 the building was abandoned to the city’s artists, rebels and fringe-dwellers who used it as a performance space, home and underground hang-out.
In 1989 Brisbane City Council reacquired Brisbane Powerhouse and with the help of architect Peter Roy brought to life their vision of inserting a theatre into the original building.
Brisbane Powerhouse is Brisbane’s leading performing arts venue and features a variety of spaces and theatres, and a unique location on the banks of the Brisbane River.
