Hummingbird House is Queensland’s only children’s hospice. It is a medically supported ‘home away from home’, providing short break stays, family support services, creative therapies, and care at the end of life for children affected by life-limiting conditions, and their families. Hummingbird House is a place where kids can be kids, families can reconnect, and precious memories can be created.
With an unprecedented collaborative design process engaging families, clinicians, community services and the international children’s hospice network, architect Thomson Adsett designed a building which exemplifies the underpinning design brief of ‘a warm embrace’. With eight guest in care suites connecting with the outdoors, five family suites providing flexible accommodation, and a purpose-built Hummingbird Suite for care at the end of life, Hummingbird House is a unique facility and service supporting Queensland children.
Visitors will have the chance to tour through the hospice, experiencing the innovative design that blends the beauty of internal courtyard spaces, an indoor pool and rooftop gardens with purpose-built clinical support services. The hospice is surrounded by gardens, including an all abilities accessible tree house. This tour provides a unique opportunity to learn more about the Hummingbird House story and the purpose of such a special building.
