Each year, Brisbane Open House (BOH) throws open the doors to the city’s most iconic and intriguing buildings—and it’s made possible thanks to an incredible team of volunteers. During National Volunteer Week, we celebrate these passionate individuals who generously give their time, energy, and enthusiasm to make BOH such a special experience.
Our Brisbane Open House volunteers come from all backgrounds—students and emerging professionals looking to build skills, seasoned volunteers passionate about architecture and history, and locals eager to connect with their community. Many are drawn by a deep interest in the built environment, while others simply enjoy meeting people and sharing stories.
One volunteer said they love “meeting people and telling them the stories of wherever I am volunteering—I learn from their stories too.” Another shared that each year brings “a new experience of Brisbane,” a fresh chance to discover and connect.
Volunteering at BOH is as diverse as the buildings themselves. Whether helping manage visitor flow, welcoming guests, or supporting behind-the-scenes logistics, volunteers are vital to the visitor experience. Every shift offers a unique perspective on the city and the opportunity to be immersed in places not usually accessible to the public.
For many, it’s the rare chance to step inside buildings not typically open to the public. “Seeing inside places that are normally off-limits, meeting lots of interesting people, and just having a fun day”—that’s how one volunteer described it. Others highlight the satisfaction of being part of something bigger and feeling like they’re contributing to a cultural event that brings the city to life. As one put it, “Wearing the orange hat makes me feel like I’m doing something worthwhile and interesting.”
Favourite Buildings
One of the perks of volunteering with Brisbane Open House is getting to explore the city’s most unique and inspiring spaces—and everyone has a favourite. Some volunteers were drawn to the reopening of Newstead House during the 2024 Brisbane Open House program (Brisbane’s oldest surviving residence), where layers of local history come to life. Others mention the charm of Miss Midgley’s in New Farm, a beautifully restored building where historic character meets contemporary design.
One person raved about volunteering at the Brisbane City Hall, saying the view and sense of civic history was unforgettable. Others loved the whole experience of stand out events, such as the energy found during the tours of the ABC Brisbane Studios or, at the other end of the spectrum, the peaceful grandeur of the St John’s Cathedral.
The dedication of BOH volunteers is incredible. Some have been returning year after year, always choosing a new venue to explore. Others are long-time community volunteers, involved with cultural institutions and museums across Brisbane. The common thread? A love for learning, sharing, and celebrating the city’s rich architectural and cultural landscape.
To every volunteer who gives their time to Brisbane Open House—thank you. Your contributions help open minds, doors, and conversations. This National Volunteer Week, we celebrate your role in bringing Brisbane’s buildings and stories to life, one tour at a time!
