Have you ever wanted to learn more about the history and design of Anzac Square and Memorial Galleries?

Opened in 1930, Anzac Square is the State War Memorial of Queensland; a significant public and historical site dedicated to the men and women who have served their country in conflict and in peace since the Boer War. It was borne from a grieving society, who gave and lost so much during the First World War, and paid for by individual donations – ordinary people, who were themselves facing difficult times in the years between WWI and the Great Depression.

As part of Brisbane House 2024, join us for a free 30-minute tour exploring the history behind Queensland’s pre-eminent war memorial. Departing 10.30 am and 2.00 pm on Sunday 14 July, come along to discover:• The significance of the Shrine of Remembrance and eternal flame
• The incorporation of symbolism in the design of Anzac Square
• The significance of the statues and memorials in the parklands, including the new memorial to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service men and women
• The recent renovations and restoration of this heritage listed site
• And the largely unknown history of the memorial galleries, a hidden treasure beneath the Cenotaph.

As part of this tour guests will also be able to view the breathtaking Don Ross mosaic, on display from 12 July – 4 August 2024. This emotive artwork is a powerful tribute to the men and women who served in WWII and features an astounding 140,000 hand cut Smalti Tessera (Venetian glass) tiles.

On the day, simply meet our knowledgeable tour guides at the main entrance of the Anzac Square Memorial Galleries (look for the large double brass doors located beneath the Shrine of Remembrance, on the left corner of the Anzac Square parklands).
