The Patrick Brisbane Autostrad terminal was opened in two stages, the first in December 2005 and the second, including the precinct of buildings dominated by the tower, in 2009. The terminal is one of the most advanced in Australia, being the first in the world to operate with the Australian designed Autostrad robotic container handling technology.
The Terminal occupies approximately 40 hectares of land and has a quay line of just over 900 metres. It functions to load and unload international cargo ships and move the shipping containers which they carry to and from road transport.
The iconic control Tower, unique in Australian stevedoring, stands 60 metres high and was inspired by the design of the mooring masts built in the 1930’s for the British Imperial Airship Scheme. It offers unparalleled views over the Port and Moreton Bay.
The three-level tower is part of a precinct of buildings comprising seven interrelated elements. These include a five-bay maintenance facility, employee amenities, pump station, offices and ancillary structures.
Designed by Fiala Ooi, these buildings are deliberately industrial in style, exhibiting a strong use of corrugated colourbond cladding and a traditional ‘saw tooth’ factory style roof. The buildings have been independently rated ‘4+’ under the Green Building Council of Australia’s Green Star Rating Guide, Office Design Tool.
