Attic Undercroft House, a one-of-a-kind family home designed to spark creativity and challenge architectural norms. This remarkable residence reimagines traditional Queensland cottages, blending seamlessly into the urban landscape while maximizing green space.

A Home Shaped by Place

Situated within a classic city block, the house respects the existing streetscape while embracing the shared central garden. Inspired by childhood memories of attics and undercrofts, this home distills the essence of Queensland living into two defining spaces—an open, grounded undercroft and a light-filled attic.

A Living Garden

Designed to harmonise with nature, the living space opens north to a small private garden, to access the sun and summer breezes. To the south is the back yard, which becomes part of the larger shared central landscape. The site dishes in the centre so the whole ground plan can be seen as one. The chain wire fences promoted interaction with the community, and become trellis for more planting.

The Undercroft: A Space for Living

Anchored by concrete platforms and a timber deck, the undercroft serves as the heart of the home. It balances openness with privacy, featuring solid side walls that double as art displays. True to its workshop-inspired aesthetic, exposed ceiling structures, concrete columns, and jar-lit fixtures evoke a raw yet refined atmosphere.

The Attic: A Space for Rest

Above, the attic is framed by striking timber trusses and zig-zagging walls, creating a continuous, expansive feel. Solid-core doors integrate seamlessly into the design, reinforcing the home’s cohesive aesthetic. Outside, perforated aluminum panels filter light, act as a rain screen, and allow the upper level to remain open to the elements.

Attic Undercroft House is a masterclass in design innovation—where memory, materiality, and modern living intersect. Tours will run on Saturday 19 July
