Holy Trinity Anglican Church and Holy Trinity Parish Hall

Holy Trinity, Fortitude Valley, was established in 1856, to serve the recent (ca 1840) settlement of Europeans in the district, making it one of the oldest churches in Brisbane. The original church gave way to the present church, built in 1877, a partial-duplicate of St Paul’s, Maryborough. Land in Fortitude Valley was divided such that the east side of Wickham Street was allocated to “church” (including Methodist and Catholic churches), while the west side was allocated to “state” (police station, school, public baths). The sanctuary of Holy Trinity was extended in 1920. The fleur-de-lis motif is prevalent throughout the building, and it is thought that the soaring steel pillars were manufactured by Smellie & Co in Edward Street, Brisbane. Unlike St Paul’s in Maryborough, Holy Trinity has magnificent stained glass windows throughout, including a recent window erected in the war memorial chapel for the ANZAC Centenary.
