Brisbane Open House is delighted to present a special Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) Edition, offering an exclusive opportunity to explore some of the island’s architecturally significant homes and hear directly from the architects behind them.
This curated day starts at the Quandamooka Arts and Culture Centre (QUAMPI), with an architectural tour with Cox Architecture, followed by architect-led tours of four residences, each demonstrating a distinct response to Stradbroke Island’s striking natural landscape and rich architectural heritage. As one of the world’s largest sand islands, Stradbroke presents a unique set of design challenges—demanding structures that are not only visually compelling but also resilient to salt-laden winds, shifting sands, and tropical weather conditions.
The island’s architectural narrative is deeply rooted in its Indigenous heritage, early settler influences, and contemporary coastal design innovations. The Quandamooka people, the island’s Traditional Owners, have maintained a profound connection to this land for thousands of years, while more recent architectural developments—from humble beach shacks to contemporary retreats—illustrate a continued dialogue between tradition, sustainability, and modern design.
