Middle House is a granny flat – but not built for a granny.
Home to a young couple and their two kids, it sits directly between both sets of grandparents, one in-front, one over the back fence, with a sister and niece between. Three generations in four households across two adjacent suburban blocks which also support two small home businesses.
The owners are participating in Brisbane Open House in the hope of broadening people’s idea of what a granny flat can look and feel like, and demonstrating how living more communally – in this case with extended family – can offer a lovely lifestyle and a slightly more affordable avenue for young families to own a home.
It’s that intergenerational living thing that people keep talking about. Nothing new of course (a good deal of the world’s population lives communally) but it’s a skill and a privilege that we seem to have forgotten at a time when perhaps we need it most.
