The Morningside School of Arts Hall stands as a magnificent example of Art Deco architecture, proudly situated in the vibrant heart of Morningside, Brisbane.
Since its official opening on February 19, 1926, this cherished community hub has been a cornerstone for countless local events and served as the community library for many years. Today, it continues to host a rich variety of activities, including art exhibits, recreational events, weddings, birthdays, dances, theatrical performances, club gatherings, markets, and so much more.
The hall, constructed from brick and timber, along with its surrounding grounds, is owned by the local community and managed by the Morningside School of Arts Incorporated Association. This rare independence from the Brisbane City Council and the Queensland State Government makes it even more special. A Brisbane City Council Heritage overlay ensures that the hall is preserved and restored, safeguarding its cultural and historical significance.
In an exciting development in 2024, the newly elected committee unearthed a treasure trove of over a century's worth of minutes, documents, photographs, and memorabilia dating back to 1913. Among these fascinating artifacts are items from the Ancient Order of Druids, who made the hall their headquarters from 1926 to 1999.
After 100 years of dedicated service, the building requires essential care and restoration to continue its legacy. To prevent it from falling into disrepair, significant fundraising efforts have begun in 2024. We estimate that approximately $250,000 is needed for vital renovations.
The new fundraising committee is committed to planning various renovation projects and community events in anticipation of the hall’s 100th birthday celebrations in 2026. Join us in preserving this historic landmark for future generations—together, we can ensure that the Morningside School of Arts Hall remains a vibrant & sustainable part of our community for years to come!
