A striking example of Art Deco architecture, the Morningside School of Arts Hall has been a beloved community landmark since its official opening on February 19, 1926. Originally serving as the local library and a hub for social events, it continues to host a vibrant mix of activities, from art exhibitions and theatre performances to weddings, markets, and club gatherings.
Built from brick and timber, the hall and its surrounding grounds are community-owned and managed by the Morningside School of Arts Incorporated Association. Unlike most heritage sites, it operates independently of the Brisbane City Council and Queensland State Government, though it is protected under a Brisbane City Council Heritage overlay to ensure its preservation.
In an exciting development in 2024, the newly elected committee unearthed a treasure trove of over a century’s worth of minutes, documents, photographs, and memorabilia dating back to 1913. Among these fascinating artifacts are items from the Ancient Order of Druids, who made the hall their headquarters from 1926 to 1999.
Preserving the Hall for the Future
After nearly a century of service, the hall is in need of restoration and renovation. To ensure its future, a fundraising campaign has been launched to raise $250,000 for essential repairs and upgrades. The new fundraising committee is also planning community events and restoration projects in the lead-up to the hall’s 100th anniversary in 2026. Join the Morningside School of Arts in preserving this historic landmark for future generations—together, we can ensure the hall remains a vibrant & sustainable part of our community for years to come.
