Guided Tours at Roma Street Parkland: Brisbane Open Home

As part of Brisbane Open House, Roma Street Parkland is offering a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes and explore the systems and sustainability practices that keep this iconic inner-city green space thriving.

The experience begins with a guided walk through the vibrant Spectacle Garden at Colin Campbell Place, where volunteers will share insights into seasonal planting and the design principles that shape the park’s horticultural displays. From there, the tour extends into restricted areas not usually open to the public, including the Parkland’s operations compound, nursery zone, and the SWARA(?) composting site.

This behind-the-scenes experience reveals how Roma Street Parkland processes 100% of its green waste on site. Visitors will learn how soft green waste is carefully turned to stimulate microbial activity and how hard green waste is collected, ground offsite by mulch contractors, and returned to the Parkland as first-grind mulch. This tour highlights the practical environmental care and detailed planning that supports the Parkland’s thriving landscapes.

Tours run on Friday 19 July and Saturday 20 July, with the volunteer-led garden tour from 10:00am to 11:30am, followed by the behind-the-scenes tour from 11:30am to 1:00pm. Participants can choose to join both tours or just the behind-the-scenes tour.

The meeting point is at The Hub. The tours are free, but bookings are essential. Please bring a hat, enclosed shoes, sunscreen, and a water bottle. Note that there is limited accessibility for people with disability due to terrain and facilities.
