Everyone knows the story of “the little tug that could” and loves our small but mighty tugboats that facilitate the arrival and departure of vessels to the Port of Brisbane, keeping our economy moving, as well as our coastline and Brisbane River safe (not least when Brisbane River floods).

Svitzer Australia is offering a very unique opportunity through the Brisbane Open House program for the community to visit our Svitzer Brisbane Tug Base and tour one of our hard-working Tugs (usually off limits to the general public), learn about our local maritime industry, port community, and what tugs do to facilitate global trade in Brisbane and Queensland.

Svitzer’s tug base is solar powered and made from re-purposed shipping containers – an acknowledgement to the industry we serve.

A tug tour will involve walking from the wharf over the gangway onto the tugboat, accessing the wheelhouse where our Tug Masters operate the vessel, touring the galley and accommodation where our crew eat and sleep, and seeing the large engine room and machinery that powers the vessels.

This unique Open House is a must for those who have an interest in the maritime industry and vessels, the Brisbane River, and the Port of Brisbane.
