Minokō, by Conrad Gargett with Studio-Wolfe is constructed on a narrow tapered site which slopes very steeply from the frontage on Lucinda Crescent through to Midjimberry Road in the East. Whilst there was the opportunity to take advantages of views available in virtually all directions, the site is also very exposed to the prevailing weather and the home is inspired by traditions of shelter near and far with its protective copper shell and its protected openings.
The house, which was completed in mid-2021, celebrates connection to environment both through physical connection and close and distant outlook. In its challenging environment Minokō with its selection of long lasting materials, copper and burnt timber, has weathered comfortably into its surroundings with minimal long term maintenance required.
Whilst very much a family home, Minokō was to be used for regular house concerts which has informed the creation of flexible space and acoustically considered internal volumes. There was a desire for this “entertainment brief” to have a positive impact on the planning for daily living, resulting in the living area open plan linking the sunken entry courtyard and the Eastern open deck. The void that links the two main levels enhances the feeling of openness in this small home, at the same time being vital for the acoustic of performances.
The planning also responds to the family’s love of experiencing the spectacular array of sunrises and sunsets, the comings and goings of family and musicians, and to a casual island way of life.
The building received an AIA Brisbane Region Commendation in 2022.
