The brief posed a simple question: pool or outdoor living room? The living room won, and from that decision came something far more considered.
‘Living Room’ is a multi-generational, year-round retreat designed for life in all its forms, from large family gatherings to solitary evenings by the fire with the football on. Low-maintenance and sustainable by design, it sits seamlessly within the existing garden while offering just enough of the unexpected to keep things interesting.
A solid concrete structure, carefully oriented to capture maximum solar gain and prevailing breezes, forms the heart of the space. A green roof regulates temperature across all seasons, while the same concrete mix threads throughout the project in varying treatments — raw, refined, and everything in between.
Against the weight of the concrete, warmer materials tell a different story. Recycled hardwood, handmade tiles, copper pipe, repurposed chemical pallets, glass bottle tops, and salvaged plumbing fixtures bring nostalgia and texture to the palette. Corten steel frames the parapet, casting deep shadow and creating a quiet separation between the rooftop planting and the timber doors below.
