Designed to work with the natural slope of its site, this two-storey home is a study in thoughtful design, where clever planning and a respect for the land have shaped every decision.

The brief called for generous outdoor living and a home embedded in its landscape rather than imposed upon it. Conventional planning was set aside in favour of spaces that are cleverly layered and purposeful, yielding interiors that are warm and textured, yet open, airy and full of light.

At the heart of the living area is a richly coloured working wall, housing the kitchen, entertaining unit and laundry, that doubles as a gallery shelf for the art and objects the owners have collected over time. A north-facing lightwell washes the space in sunlight, while a black spiral stair and copper benchtop add character that will only deepen with age. The living area flows seamlessly outside, stepping down to a sunken lounge and landscaped backyard.

Structurally, the house sits like an island on the block, leaving the site’s natural topography largely intact. Exposed joists, stucco walls and polished concrete bring texture and continuity while keeping the project grounded and on budget. Low-set windows frame garden views at every turn, and the lightwell ensures even the most interior spaces feel connected to the outside.

A modest footprint required some trade-offs – no formal entry, no scullery, and a fourth bedroom scaled back to a study – but the result, as its name suggests, is that very little was sacrificed at all.
