One of Australia’s most iconic sporting venues, The Gabba has been at the heart of Brisbane’s sporting and cultural life for over a century. The land was set aside for use as a cricket ground in 1895, with the first match held on site on 19 December 1896. Since then it has hosted Test cricket, AFL, rugby league, rugby union, and more.
Between 1993 and 2005, the Gabba was redeveloped in six stages, transforming it into the modern stadium that Brisbane knows today. The stadium spans four levels, two public grandstand levels, one corporate level and one basement level, with light towers standing 80 metres tall. Beneath it all, a heritage-listed stormwater drain continues to flow, a quiet reminder of the layers of history hidden underneath the surface of the city.
During Brisbane Open House, explore and experience the Gabba, before it’s too late! Following the 2032 Olympics, the Gabba is is slated for redevelopment into a new urban precinct. After more than 130 years as a cornerstone of Brisbane’s sporting identity, this is a rare chance to walk the stands and hear the stories.
