York is a pre-war Queenslander that has been thoughtfully extended and reimagined for contemporary subtropical living, while preserving the warmth and character of the original building. Rather than starting from scratch, the design reuses the existing structure – a decision that reduces waste and maintains the authentic feel of life in a Queenslander.
The extension is oriented to make the most of Queensland’s climate, with the kitchen relocated to the east to capture morning light and prevailing breezes. Living spaces flow seamlessly to a new pool and outdoor entertaining area at the rear, blurring the line between inside and out.
A radial-cut timber cladding in a board-and-batten system wraps the addition — a sustainable choice that makes use of the whole log and reduces offcuts. A suspended concrete planter screens the dining room from neighbouring properties, offering privacy without closing off the connection to the landscape.
Internally, muted tones, brushed finishes, warm natural timber floors and carefully considered materiality create a sense of relaxed luxury. The home accommodates three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a double garage, with dual street access adding flexibility for everyday living.
