This 1950s shack, authentically reimagined by O’Neill Archicture
Completed in 2022, Skyline sits atop a knoll at Point Lookout with views to Snapper Rocks to the south and Moreton Island to the north. A typical Straddie fibro shack was erected in the 1950’s, semi-buried into the hill to protect the structure from the south easterly winds. There have been a couple of minor additions over the last 70 years, but the shack is fairly intact.
For this renovation, the existing 50’s shack roof area was fully maintained, asbestos removed, frame repaired and then a new configuration of rooms arranged below the roof footprint. This creates a new life for the building while maintaining the shack-scale on the headland. The existing building becomes the family entertaining area, the social hub. Bedrooms are then arranged in a new separate building on the street side. Each room is conceived as a private sanctuary, with the shack as the communal hub.
The landscape and external decks provide a range of places to read and hang out. They are positioned to allow refuge form sun and wind depending on the elements of the day, and scaled for privacy or communal interaction as required.
80% of materials from the refurbishment were recycled, reused or repurposed as a part of the construction. We are in the process of creating a guidebook which documents this process for general use.
