Expand your Heritage Experience of Brisbane through our 2023 Iconic Precinct!

We are delighted to announce Herston Health & Heritage as our 2023 Iconic Precinct partner.

Herston Health & Heritage incorporates five separate entities within the broader Herston Health Precinct that will jointly participate in the 2023 Brisbane Open House Program as the Iconic Precinct.

Many of the featured buildings were constructed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries including the Lady Lamington Nurses’ Home and Towers constructed in three separate periods between 1896 and 1938 along with the Edith Cavell Building constructed in 1922 and The University of Queensland’s Mayne Medical School which opened in 1936. Together these three buildings offer a rich tapestry of some of our state’s most significant heritage buildings.

In addition to these heritage gems, QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute and Pathology Queensland will open their doors to the public to step inside and see working labs while meeting some of the researchers working on the most significant health and medical research projects in the state.

Collectively the Herston Health & Heritage precinct will offer visitors a diverse mix of stunning heritage architecture, glimpses into medical research and the rich history of its evolution, while touring working labs that support whole of state medical needs.

There is something of interest at Herston for everyone who visits.

On a 5.2 hectare site in Brisbane’s inner north, Herston Quarter is part of the Herston Health Precinct and encompasses several buildings that hold significant heritage value to Brisbane as the former accommodation for nurses during a time when it was compulsory to live onsite near the hospital.

As part of Brisbane Open House, Australian Unity will be opening the recently revitalised Edith Cavell Building, former nurses’ quarters constructed in 1922, now operating as the Australian Unity Brisbane headquarters. Beautifully landscaped gardens and public realm envelop the Edith Cavell Building and Lady Lamington Nurses’ Home and Towers and will provide an inviting space for people to sit, relax and perhaps enjoy a bite to eat.

Australian Unity is proudly delivering the Herston Quarter Redevelopment, transforming the site into a vibrant, mixed-use precinct with a number of world-class medical and research facilities dedicated to advancing medical research, education and practice.

UniLodge Herston manage student accommodation within the heritage-listed Lady Lamington Nurses’ Home and the refurbished Spanish Mission style Lady Lamington North and South Towers located in the heart of the Herston Quarter Redevelopment.
